Day Note: Sept 30th

Appointments and avoiding burnout

Published by Oleander Craw in writing Share

I've been feeling rather antsy this week. I'm not entirely sure what the reason is, except that I have a lot on my plate every day medical appointment wise. It makes it hard for me to focus on writing when my day is disrupted in this way, because I end up stressing about the appointment that day (not a huge fan of interacting with medical providers, which I'm sure is a feeling I am not alone in).

On the Devouring Fortune side of things, we are officially two weeks out from release!!! Really kind of wild that we're so close and the book is just...going to be out there soon. If you haven't pre-ordered already, you can find all the pre-order links here.

FOCUS: Today my focus was on Chapter 2 of Mageruins. I realized I needed to split off part of the chapter I was writing into Chapter 3, as there is a natural cliff hanger that is perfect for the end of chapter 2. I came in at 760 words for the day, which is pretty good!

As of today, I'm sitting at 7,900 words total on this project already which is honestly...rather stunning. I have to emphasize that I am a slow writer, so this type of progress is really amazing.

PROCESS & SUCH: Did three sprints this morning and got the majority of these words in pretty quick. When my laptop battery started getting angry with me, I took a break to play some video games and then came back to focus on a mini writing push around lunch time. I had to go to a medical appointment in the afternoon (not great, provider turned out to be either transphobic or particularly dense, so I ended up immediately calling a new provider my physical therapist recommended to get in quickly).

When I got home there was no way I was going to write more, so I decided to call it a day. My goal really is to work up to 2000 words/day if possible, but I'm trying to view this more of a marathon goal than a sprint. I've burnt myself out before with pushing towards a specific word count amount daily, so I really want to be careful about not getting in that space again, while also pushing what I can do in a day.

WATCHING: Real House Wives of Rhode Island. I love drama. I learned the phrase slam pig.

LISTENING: Control Resonant soundtrack. The songs from this game are SO GOOD.

PLAYING: In lieu of what I'm reading, I'm currently playing Control Resonant. Prepare for this game to consume me for awhile. I was a little on the fence initially about it, but the longer I play, the more I'm enjoying the overall experience.

One of the things I really like this game is just...how weird the gameplay is. There was a moment today where I stumbled into a new location that was so vast and cool and strange that I had to yell a little bit.

LINK: Micaiah Johnson recently started a Patreon, posting essays about writing and life. The most recent one legit made me cry while reading first thing in the morning. It's about The Little Prince (one of my favorite books) and the shape of absence and loss.

UP NEXT: Tomorrow I would really like to get this Chapter 2 finished!! I want to be able to focus on the synopsis soon.
